Turn a diagonal into useful screen dimensions

Enter the advertised diagonal and aspect ratio to see the visible width and height. If you have already measured both sides, switch modes to recover the diagonal in inches.

The rectangle behind the inch label

A diagonal, width, and height form a right triangle. For diagonal D and aspect ratio a:b, the calculator scales both parts of that ratio to the same hypotenuse.

When width and height are known, the reverse calculation is D=W2+H2D=\sqrt{W^2+H^2}. All lengths are converted through centimetres. One international inch is exactly 2.54 cm, as listed in the NIST conversion factors.

What 32, 55, and 65 inches look like

32-inch TV. At 16:9, the visible rectangle is about 70.8 ร— 39.8 cm. That is the panel, not the outer case.

55-inch TV. The same shape gives about 121.8 ร— 68.5 cm. This is a quick way to compare the screen with a media unit before choosing a model.

65-inch TV. The panel grows to roughly 143.9 ร— 80.9 cm. Moving from 55 to 65 inches adds about 22 cm of screen width.

34-inch ultrawide monitor. At 21:9, the result is about 79.4 ร— 34.0 cm, wider and shorter than a 16:9 screen with the same diagonal.

A calculated panel is not the complete product

Manufacturers normally use the visible screen diagonal for the size class. Bezels, controls, stands, speakers, and feet sit outside the calculated rectangle. Nominal sizes can also be rounded.

For a shelf or recess, use this result only for early planning. Before buying, check the exact model dimensions with and without its stand, cable clearance, foot spacing, and mounting drawing. A few millimetres of theoretical clearance is not an installation allowance.

The aspect ratio describes shape, not resolution. A 1920 ร— 1080 panel and a 3840 ร— 2160 panel can both be 16:9. Pixel count does not change the side lengths derived from a given diagonal and ratio.

How wide is a 55-inch TV screen?

A 16:9 screen is about 121.8 cm wide and 68.5 cm high. The complete television will be slightly larger.

Does the diagonal include the bezel?

No. Measure the visible image area from one corner to the opposite corner. The bezel belongs to the product's outer dimensions.

Can two screens with the same diagonal have different widths?

Yes. Aspect ratio changes the rectangle. A 4:3 screen is narrower and taller than a 16:9 screen with the same diagonal.

How do I find the diagonal from width and height?

Select the width and height mode, use one unit for both measurements, and enter the visible screen sides. The calculator returns inches and centimetres.

Is 16:9 the same as 4K?

No. 16:9 describes shape; 4K describes a pixel count. Several resolutions share the same aspect ratio.

Can I use this for a monitor or projector screen?
