How playback speed changes the remaining time

Headphones beside a long audio track compressed into a shorter listening track

The calculator subtracts the position already reached from the book’s original timeline, then divides the remainder by the selected playback speed.

Copy the times from the player without converting them

Enter the full length and current position as separate hours and minutes. If the player shows 4:20 of 10:00, enter 4 hours 20 minutes as the position even if faster playback means you spent less real time listening.

Tleft=TbookTpositionvT_{\text{left}} = \frac{T_{\text{book}} - T_{\text{position}}}{v}

All durations are converted to minutes before the division. The result is rounded to the nearest second for display.

Worked listening plans

A 10-hour book at 1.25×. The listening time becomes 8 hours, saving 2 hours. At 40 minutes per day, that is 12 daily sessions.

15 hours 20 minutes with 4 hours 20 minutes reached. Eleven source hours remain. At 1.25× they take 8 hours 48 minutes; 30 minutes per day gives 18 days and an 18-minute final day.

A 20-hour book with 5 hours completed. The remaining 15 hours take 7 hours 30 minutes at 2×, exactly ten sessions of 45 minutes.

A schedule is not a comprehension score

A speed of 1.5× makes the new duration two thirds of the original, so it saves one third rather than one half. Slower playback works in reverse: 90 minutes at 0.75× takes 120 minutes.

D=TleftmD = \left\lceil \frac{T_{\text{left}}}{m} \right\rceil

The day count assumes one session every day at the entered length. Pauses, rewinds, notes, skipped days, silence trimming and changing speed can move the actual finish date. The calculator measures time only; it cannot tell whether a speed is comfortable or whether the material was understood.

Audiobook timing questions

These answers separate the book’s timeline from real listening time and explain the planning result.

Should I enter the full book or only the remaining part?

Enter the full length and current position separately. The calculator subtracts the position before applying the playback speed.

What does position reached mean?

It is the timestamp on the book’s original timeline. Do not enter the shorter time already spent listening at an accelerated speed.

Why does 1.5× not save 50%?

The new time is the original divided by 1.5, which equals two thirds. The saved part is therefore one third, about 33.3%.

Can I calculate slower playback?

Yes. Speeds from 0.5× to below 1× increase the required time, and the result labels that difference as extra time.

How are days to finish counted?

The remaining real minutes are divided by the daily minutes and rounded up. The last day can be shorter than the others.

What if I change speed between chapters?

Calculate each section at its own speed and add the real times. Averaging the speed values can be wrong when the sections have different lengths.
