How this printing cost calculator works

A sheet emerges from a printer beside an ink cartridge

Enter the price and page yield of your cartridge, the price of one sheet, and the number of pages. The calculator returns a cost per black-and-white page and the total for that print job.

From cartridge price to page price

Divide the cartridge or toner price by the number of pages it can print. Add the price of one sheet. That sum is the estimated cost of a single-sided page; multiply it by the page count to budget the batch. Use the same currency for both prices.

Cost per page = cartridge price รท cartridge yield + price per sheet. The total job cost is the cost per page multiplied by the number of pages.

Three useful comparisons

  1. A cartridge costing 2,400 for 1,200 pages contributes 2 per page. At 0.8 per sheet, the page costs 2.8, and 100 pages cost 280.
  2. Cartridge A costs 1,800 and prints 600 pages; cartridge B costs 3,600 and prints 2,000. With paper at 0.8, A costs 3.8 per page and B 2.6. For 500 pages the totals are 1,900 and 1,300, so the higher-priced cartridge is cheaper to use.
  3. A toner refill priced at 6,000 and rated for 3,000 pages contributes 2 per page. Add paper at 0.5: a 400-page job costs 1,000. Check that the stated yield actually fits your printing habits.

What the estimate leaves out

Yield is a page count, not a guaranteed amount of ink or toner. Heavy coverage can shorten it. If you know your actual replacement interval, use that number instead of the rating. Divide a paper pack's price by its sheet count before entering the sheet price.

This is a one-sided, one-page-per-sheet model. It does not include the printer, electricity, maintenance, a separate drum, labor, or wasted sheets. The displayed unit price is rounded; the job total is calculated from the unrounded value.

Printing cost questions

Can I use any currency?

Yes. Enter both prices in one currency; every displayed amount uses that same currency. The calculator does not exchange currencies.

How do I enter paper sold by the pack?

Divide the pack price by the number of sheets, then enter that price per sheet.

Is cartridge yield always accurate?

No. It is a rating or estimate. Page coverage and printer settings may change actual yield, so use observed yield when you have it.

Does this calculate double-sided printing?

No. It assumes one printed page uses one sheet. For duplex work the paper portion must be adjusted separately.

Does the total include owning the printer?

No. Purchase, servicing, electricity, and other overhead are outside this simple consumables-and-paper calculation.
