How the nautical-mile converter works
Enter a distance in nautical miles or statute miles. The other field updates immediately, and the centre control reverses the direction.
The factor comes from two exact definitions
An international nautical mile is exactly 1852 metres. An international statute mile is exactly 1609.344 metres, so their ratio is fixed:
One nautical mile is approximately 1.150779448024 miles. For the reverse conversion, multiply miles by approximately 0.868976241901.
Distances in navigation and on land
5 nmi = 5.753897240118 mi. A short approach measured on a nautical chart is a little longer when expressed in road miles.
20 nmi = 23.015588960471 mi. This is a useful scale for a coastal passage.
50 mi = 43.448812095032 nmi. Enter the road distance in the second field to convert in the other direction.
A knot is a speed, not another mile
A nautical mile measures distance. A knot means one nautical mile per hour, so a value in knots cannot be entered as a distance without also knowing the travel time.
The conversion changes only the unit. It does not turn a sea route into a road route or account for bends, coastlines, airways or map projections.
