How the square-foot converter works
Enter an area in square feet or square metres. The other field updates immediately, and the centre control reverses the direction.
The factor comes from the international foot
An international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres. Area uses two dimensions, so the length factor is squared: one square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metre.
The calculator keeps the exact factor and only shortens the displayed decimal when necessary.
Room and property examples
A 180 ft² bedroom is 16.7225472 m². That makes it easier to compare a floor plan drawn in imperial units with metric furniture dimensions.
A 750 ft² flat is 69.67728 m². The conversion changes the unit, not the usable floor area.
A 50 m² studio is about 538.195520835 ft². Enter the metric value in the second field when reading an international listing.
Area is not a side length
Do not multiply square feet by 0.3048. That factor converts a length in feet; an area needs the squared factor 0.09290304.
A precise conversion cannot improve an approximate measurement. If a room was measured to the nearest foot, the metric result should not be treated as millimetre-accurate.
Questions about ft² and m²
The answers below cover the exact factor, reverse conversion and common reading mistakes.
How many square metres are in one square foot?
One international square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metre.
How many square feet are in one square metre?
One square metre is approximately 10.76391041671 square feet.
Do I multiply or divide square feet to get square metres?
Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. For the reverse direction, divide square metres by 0.09290304.
Are ft² and linear feet the same?
No. A linear foot measures length, while a square foot measures area.
Can this conversion tell me a room’s dimensions?
No. Area alone does not determine length and width; different room shapes can have the same area.
