One color, three useful notations
The converter reads an sRGB color in HEX, RGB, or HSL and writes it in another of those formats. Its swatch shows the resulting color over a checkerboard, so an alpha value remains visible.
Choose what you have and what you need
Select the input notation first. A HEX value uses 3, 4, 6, or 8 hexadecimal digits. RGB asks for three whole channels from 0 to 255; HSL asks for hue, saturation, and lightness. RGB and HSL also accept alpha from 0 to 1. Then choose a different output notation and copy the answer into CSS.
HEX is a compact channel code. Each pair in #RRGGBB is a hexadecimal number. HSL describes the same sRGB color by hue in degrees and saturation and lightness in percent. The CSS Color specification defines these notations and the optional final alpha pair in eight-digit HEX.
Check a color before reusing it
Muted blue: enter #336699 and choose RGB. The result is rgb(51,102,153); choosing HSL gives hsl(210,50%,40%). These are two descriptions of the same blue.
Small white code: enter #FFF. Each digit repeats, so RGB is rgb(255,255,255). The short form saves characters, not color detail for this particular value.
Transparent black: enter #00000080. RGB becomes rgba(0,0,0,0.502). The final byte means 128/255 opacity; the checkerboard makes that distinction from solid gray apparent.
Rounding and screen appearance
RGB channels are whole numbers, while HSL is shown to one decimal place and alpha to three. Switching back and forth can therefore shift the last decimal. The tool does not convert Display P3, CMYK, Lab, or OkLCh. A preview cannot predict every display profile or tell whether text has enough contrast against a background.
Questions about color codes
A valid code still needs the right interpretation, especially when it contains transparency or a shorthand form.
Can I omit the # sign?
Yes. Enter 336699 or #336699. The resulting HEX code includes #.
What does the fourth digit in #RGBA mean?
It is the alpha channel. Each shorthand digit repeats, so #0008 expands to #00000088.
Why does gray have hue 0ยฐ?
When all RGB channels are equal, HSL saturation is 0%. Hue no longer changes the color, so the converter reports 0ยฐ consistently.
Is HSL lightness the same as visual brightness?
No. Different hues with the same HSL lightness can look much brighter or darker to the eye.
Will the code look identical on every screen?
The numerical sRGB color is the same, but display profiles, calibration, brightness, and surrounding colors can change how it appears.
