How the liter and milliliter converter works
Enter a volume in liters or milliliters. The other field updates at once, and the center button swaps the direction.
The conversion uses an exact factor of 1,000
The prefix milli means one thousandth. A milliliter is therefore one thousandth of a liter, so the conversion does not depend on the liquid.
Quick checks for bottles and recipes
- 0.25 L = 250 mL. This is a common cup-sized amount.
- 1.5 L = 1,500 mL. The bottle size becomes a whole number of milliliters.
- 90 mL = 0.09 L. Divide by 1,000 for the smaller quantity.
- 750 mL = 0.75 L. The decimal point moves three places to the left.
Volume conversion is not a mass conversion
Liters and milliliters measure volume. They do not tell you the weight of milk, oil or flour because mass also depends on density. The calculator keeps decimal values and groups large numbers only for easier reading.
Questions about liters and milliliters
These answers cover the most common checks when reading a label or following a recipe.
How many milliliters are in one liter?
There are exactly 1,000 milliliters in one liter.
How do I convert milliliters to liters?
Divide the number of milliliters by 1,000. For example, 500 mL is 0.5 L.
Is 250 mL a quarter of a liter?
Yes. One quarter of 1,000 mL is 250 mL.
Does the type of liquid change the conversion?
No. The volume relationship is the same for water, oil and any other material.
Are mL and cubic centimeters equal?
Yes. One milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter.
