How the feet to inches converter works

Each foot contains exactly twelve inches
Feet and inches belong to the same measurement system, so the relationship is a whole number rather than a rounded decimal. Multiply feet by 12; divide inches by 12 to return to feet.

Mixed feet-and-inches measurements need one extra step
A written length such as 5 ft 8 in contains two parts. Convert the feet first, then add the remaining inches: 5 × 12 + 8 = 68 inches.
Decimal feet follow the same rule. For example, 2.25 ft × 12 = 27 in. Keep decimals only when the original measurement is precise enough to justify them.
