How the PSI to bar converter works
Enter a pressure in either field and the matching value appears immediately. The menus also let you work with Pa, kPa, MPa and standard atmospheres.
The conversion factor
PSI means pound-force per square inch. Bar is defined from the pascal, with 1 bar equal to 100,000 Pa. Using the standard pound-force and inch definitions gives this relationship:
For the reverse conversion, divide by that factor or multiply bar by about 14.503773773. The calculator converts through pascals internally and rounds only the value shown in the field.
Pressure readings in everyday ranges
30 psi becomes 2.068427188 bar. If a gauge or manual uses bar, a 30 psi reading is therefore a little above 2 bar. This is a unit conversion, not a recommended setting.
32 psi becomes 2.2063223338 bar. The extra 2 psi changes the result by about 0.138 bar, which shows why rounding everything to whole bars would be too rough.
120 psi becomes 8.2737087518 bar. This range can occur in pneumatic equipment, where keeping a decimal place is often more useful than a whole-number estimate.
2.5 bar becomes 36.2594344326 psi. Editing the bar field performs the reverse calculation, so the same converter works with a specification written in either unit.
Gauge pressure and absolute pressure are different questions
The converter changes the unit but not the reference point. A tyre gauge normally reports pressure above the surrounding air, called gauge pressure. Absolute pressure starts from a perfect vacuum. A reading of 0 bar gauge is therefore not the same physical state as 0 bar absolute.
Standard atmosphere is included as a unit and equals exactly 101,325 Pa, or 1.01325 bar. Selecting atm does not automatically turn gauge pressure into absolute pressure. Use values measured from the same reference, and follow the equipment or vehicle manufacturerโs specified conditions.
Pressure itself may change with temperature, load or process conditions, but the numerical factor between psi and bar does not. The converter does not correct a measurement for those changes.
Questions about PSI and bar
These distinctions help when a gauge, manual and calculator use different notation.
How many bar is 1 psi?
One psi is approximately 0.0689475729 bar.
How many psi is 1 bar?
One bar is approximately 14.503773773 psi.
Is PSI the same as pounds of force?
No. PSI is pressure: one pound-force distributed over one square inch.
Does temperature change the PSI to bar formula?
No. Temperature can change the pressure of a system, but it does not change the conversion factor between the two units.
Can I convert a tyre recommendation with this tool?
Yes, if the recommendation and the reading describe the same type of pressure. The tool converts the number; it does not choose a safe pressure for a specific tyre.
Why does a rounded gauge differ slightly from the converter?
Many gauges show only one or two decimal places. The converter keeps more digits, so the displayed readings can differ by a small rounding amount.
