Convert through seconds

Each unit has a factor measured in seconds. The converter multiplies by the source factor, then divides by the factor of the target unit.

Here t is the duration and k is the number of seconds in one selected unit. A minute is exactly 60 seconds, an hour 3,600 seconds, and a day 86,400 seconds. These relationships match the BIPM SI Brochure.

Three conversions worth checking

A meeting: 90 minutes equals 1.5 hours. The decimal 0.5 hour means another 30 minutes, not 50 minutes.

A video response: 250 milliseconds equals 0.25 seconds. Dividing milliseconds by 1,000 moves to seconds.

A two-week plan: 14 days equals 2 weeks or 336 hours. The quantity stays the same while the number changes with the unit.

A duration is not a calendar date

Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks have fixed factors here. Calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days and calendar years may have 365 or 366 days, so the month and year options use averages: 30.436875 days per month and 365.2425 days per year.

The display keeps up to 12 significant digits and uses scientific notation for extreme values. This avoids turning a tiny nonzero duration into zero, but it cannot make the original measurement more accurate. Use a date calculator when the start and end dates matter.

Questions about time units

The key distinction is whether the task concerns a measured interval or named dates on a calendar.

How many seconds are in an hour?

Exactly 3,600 seconds: 60 minutes multiplied by 60 seconds.

Why is 1.5 hours not 1 hour 50 minutes?

The fractional part is decimal. Half an hour is 0.5 multiplied by 60, which is 30 minutes.

Are months exact in this converter?

No. The month option is an average of 30.436875 days because real calendar months have different lengths.

Can I edit the converted field?

Yes. Both fields work as inputs, and the field changed most recently becomes the source.

Does this handle time zones or daylight saving time?

No. It converts durations only. Time-zone offsets and clock changes require a date-and-time tool.
