How the fraction calculator finds an exact answer
Enter two fractions or mixed numbers. The calculator converts them to exact fractions, performs the chosen operation and reduces the answer without rounding it to a decimal.
Enter the parts of each fraction
A numerator counts pieces; a denominator says how many equal pieces make one whole. For a simple fraction, set the whole part to zero. A mixed number combines a whole part with a proper fraction. The denominator must be positive, and the second fraction cannot be zero when you choose division.
With addition or subtraction, the calculator first gives the two fractions a common denominator. Multiplication combines numerators and denominators directly. Division uses the reciprocal of the second fraction. Every operation ends by dividing the answer's numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
The expression shows the addition rule with a possible common denominator. The calculator normally uses the least common denominator, which keeps intermediate numbers smaller.
Three sums worth checking
- For a recipe, combine one sixth of a cup with one third of a cup. One third equals two sixths, so the total is one half of a cup. Enter 0 as both whole parts.
- A walk of three quarters of an hour followed by two thirds of an hour takes one and five twelfths hours. That is one hour and 25 minutes, because five twelfths of 60 minutes equals 25.
- Adding negative one half to positive one half gives zero. Put the minus on the first numerator while its whole part is zero. A zero answer is valid, not a missing result.
Read the mixed number and its limits
The large answer is a reduced mixed number when its absolute value exceeds one. The equivalent improper fraction appears as a secondary value. The expandable steps show the denominator conversion, arithmetic and reduction. The copied expression keeps the exact fraction instead of a rounded decimal.
A negative mixed number has one sign for the entire quantity. Enter negative two and a half as whole part โ2, numerator 1 and denominator 2. If you put a negative numerator beside a nonzero whole part, the input is rejected rather than silently changing its meaning. Each field accepts up to 15 digits.
Fractions can describe amounts only when they refer to the same unit or whole. Half of one small cake and half of a larger cake cannot be added as though they formed exactly one cake of a single size.
Questions about adding fractions
These cases matter most when a handwritten answer seems different from the reduced result.
Why does the calculator change the denominators?
The pieces must have the same size before their counts can be added. One half and one quarter become two quarters and one quarter, giving three quarters.
May the numerator be larger than the denominator?
Yes. Enter an improper fraction with a zero whole part. Seven thirds remains exact and can be shown as two and one third in the answer.
Can I add three fractions?
Add the first two, then enter that exact reduced result with the third. Avoid rounding either intermediate answer to a decimal.
Why is division by a zero fraction blocked?
A reciprocal of zero does not exist, so dividing by a fraction whose numerator is zero has no defined result.
Is a mixed number the same as a decimal?
No. One and one third is exact; the decimal 1.33 is an approximation. The calculator keeps the exact fractional form.
