How the knots to km/h converter works

One knot is exactly 1.852 km/h
A knot is one nautical mile per hour. Since the international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, the conversion contains no estimated constant:

Speeds worth recognising
- 1 kn = 1.852 km/h. This is the exact base relationship.
- 10 kn = 18.52 km/h. A small craft at ten knots is moving at a little under 20 km/h.
- 20 kn = 37.04 km/h. Doubling the knots doubles every converted value.
- 100 km/h = 53.99568 kn. Entering the metric speed performs the reverse calculation.
Selecting mph shows that 10 kn is about 11.507794 mph. A statute mile and a nautical mile are different lengths, so the numbers are close but not equal.
The unit changes, not the kind of speed
Knots appear in marine navigation, aviation and wind reports. Converting the unit does not correct for current, wind or instrument method. Ten knots of boat speed through water and ten knots of speed over ground share a number, but describe different measurements.
A knot measures speed; a nautical mile measures distance. Avoid phrases such as “knots per hour”, which would divide a speed by time again. The short label used here is kn.
