How the miles to kilometres converter works

One exact factor connects the two units
The international statute mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. The converter keeps that factor in the calculation and rounds only the displayed answer to at most six decimal places.

- 1 mile = 1.609344 km. This is the basic conversion factor.

Choose statute miles, not nautical miles
Road signs, running plans and car odometers normally use statute miles. A nautical mile is a different unit equal to 1.852 kilometres, so it needs a different conversion.
For a quick mental estimate, multiply miles by 1.6. That shortcut is convenient for travel planning, but use the exact factor when a route, drawing or specification needs a precise value.
