How the area converter works
Enter a known area in either field and choose its unit. The other field updates immediately, whether you are comparing square metres with square feet or hectares with acres.
Every conversion passes through square metres
Each factor k states how many square metres one unit contains. For example, one hectare contains 10,000 m² and one international square foot contains exactly 0.09290304 m². The imperial factors follow from the exact inch and foot definitions in the NIST area conversion table.
Checks for rooms and land
- 1 are = 100 m². This is the default example and a useful parcel-size reference.
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m². A hectare is also exactly 100 ares.
- 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m². Rounded to hectares, that is about 0.404686 ha.
For an indoor measurement, 20 m² is approximately 215.278208 ft². Editing the square-foot field converts in the opposite direction without an intermediate rounded value.
Square units use squared length factors
One foot is 0.3048 metre, but one square foot is not 0.3048 m². Both sides of the square must be converted, so the factor is 0.3048² = 0.09290304.
This tool converts a known area; it does not calculate area from a room's length and width. Ordinary results show up to six decimal places, while extremely small or large values use scientific notation rather than being rounded to a misleading zero.
Questions about area units
The main traps are using a linear factor for a square unit and confusing conversion with measuring a shape.
How many square metres are in a hectare?
One hectare contains exactly 10,000 square metres.
How many square metres are in an acre?
One international acre contains exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres.
Is an are the same as 100 square metres?
Yes. One are is exactly 100 square metres.
Can the converter calculate a room from its dimensions?
No. First multiply the room's length by its width, then convert the resulting area here.
Why can a result appear in scientific notation?
Scientific notation keeps a very small or very large nonzero conversion readable without discarding it through rounding.
