How the feet to centimetres converter works
Type a length in either field and the matching value appears in the other. The unit menus also let you compare the same distance in inches, yards, metres, kilometres, millimetres or miles.
One foot is exactly 30.48 centimetres
The international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 metre, so the centimetre factor is exact too. Multiply feet by 30.48; for the reverse calculation, divide centimetres by 30.48. The factor is listed in the NIST conversion table.
Useful values to recognise
- 1 ft = 30.48 cm. This is the exact base relationship.
- 3 ft = 91.44 cm. Three feet are a little shorter than one metre.
- 6 ft = 182.88 cm. This is a familiar scale for a person's height, though measurements are often written as feet plus inches.
Working backwards, 100 cm is approximately 3.28084 ft. Editing the centimetre field performs that division without first rounding the metric value.
Feet and inches need two entries
A measurement such as 5 ft 10 in contains two units and cannot be pasted as one number. Convert 5 feet and 10 inches separately, or change the inches to a decimal part of a foot before adding them.
The converter shows up to six decimal places and removes trailing zeroes. Keep only the precision your original measurement supports; a tape measure read to the nearest centimetre does not become more accurate after conversion.
Questions about feet and centimetres
The conversion factor is fixed. Most practical questions concern mixed feet-and-inches notation and sensible rounding.
How many centimetres are in one foot?
One international foot is exactly 30.48 centimetres.
How do I convert feet to centimetres?
Multiply the number of feet by 30.48.
How many feet are in 100 centimetres?
One hundred centimetres are approximately 3.28084 feet.
Are 12 inches equal to one foot?
Yes. One international foot contains exactly 12 inches, and one inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres.
Can I enter 5 ft 10 in directly?
Not as a combined entry. Convert each part separately or express the inches as a fraction of a foot.
