How the feet to metres converter works
Enter a length in feet or metres. The opposite field updates immediately, and either unit menu can switch the calculation to inches, yards, miles, millimetres, centimetres or kilometres.
One foot is exactly 0.3048 metres
The international foot has an exact metric definition, so the conversion factor does not need an approximation. To work backwards, divide metres by 0.3048. The same factor appears in the NIST length conversion table.
The converter accepts decimal values on either side and displays up to six decimal places. Changing the unit recalculates the same physical length rather than changing the measurement itself.
Lengths worth recognising
- 1 ft = 0.3048 m. This is the exact base conversion.
- 6 ft = 1.8288 m. It is a useful reference for height or clearance.
- 100 ft = 30.48 m. A round imperial value makes a building or site measurement easy to check.
Another useful identity is 3 feet = 0.9144 metres = 1 yard. Selecting yards in the menu confirms the relationship without a separate calculation.
Feet and inches need separate input
A notation such as 5 ft 10 in combines two units. The numeric field does not parse that written form. Convert 5 feet and 10 inches separately, or turn the inches into feet first: 10 ÷ 12 = 0.833333 feet, so the total is about 5.833333 feet.
Keep only as many decimal places as the original measurement justifies. Six displayed digits are useful for conversion, but they cannot make a roughly measured room or object more precise.
