How the megabits-to-megabytes converter works
Enter a value in megabits or megabytes. The second field updates immediately, and the swap button reverses the conversion.
The difference is eight bits per byte
A byte contains exactly eight bits. Because both units use the same mega prefix, it cancels out:
Divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes. Multiply megabytes by 8 to go back.
Useful reference values
- 8 Mb = 1 MB. This is the basic relationship.
- 100 Mb = 12.5 MB. The same ratio gives 100 Mb/s = 12.5 MB/s.
- 1,000 Mb = 125 MB.
Size and speed need matching units
Mb usually labels a number of bits, while MB labels bytes. Adding “per second” turns both into rates, but the factor of eight stays the same.
The converter does not estimate real download time. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi quality and the server can make actual throughput lower.

How many megabytes are in 100 megabits?
100 megabits equal 12.5 megabytes.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get the theoretical MB/s rate.
Why is the letter B capitalised in MB?
An uppercase B denotes bytes, while a lowercase b denotes bits.
Are MB and MiB the same?
No. MB is normally decimal, while MiB is binary and contains 1,048,576 bytes.
Does 800 Mb always download as a 100 MB file?
The quantities are equivalent, but transferred data can include protocol overhead and the displayed file size may use a different prefix convention.
