How the discount calculator works

The calculator turns an original price and a percentage into a final price and saving. It can also work backward from a sale price, derive the percentage between two prices, or apply two discounts one after the other.

Choose the value that is missing

Select one of the four modes, then enter only the figures shown. Money fields have no currency symbol because 1000 to 800 follows the same arithmetic in dollars, euros, pesos or any other single currency.

For a standard discount, the remaining share of the price is multiplied by the original amount:

PP is the original price, FF is the final price and dd is the discount percentage. Savings equal PFP-F.

To recover the original price, divide the final price by the remaining share. To find the percentage from two prices, divide the saving by the original price:

Two discounts use two multipliers. A 20% discount leaves 80%, then a 10% discount leaves 90% of that reduced price.

Three ways to read a sale label

Final price. An item priced at 1000 with 20% off costs 800. The saving is 200.

Original price. A sale price of 720 after a 28% discount represents 72% of the original price. Dividing 720 by 0.72 gives 1000.

Discount from two prices. A price reduced from 1000 to 750 saves 250. The saving is 25% of the original price, so the discount is 25%.

Two promotions. Discounts of 20% and 10% on 1000 produce 1000 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 720. The effective discount is 28%, not 30%.

What the percentage does not prove

The calculation uses the original price as its base. Dividing a saving by the final price answers a different question and gives a larger percentage. A final price above the original is an increase, so the discount mode rejects it.

An original price cannot be recovered after a 100% discount. Every positive original price becomes zero, so the result contains no clue about the starting amount.

Results are displayed with at most two decimal places, while the formula uses the unrounded values. A retailer may round each item, the whole basket or tax differently. Enter prices in one currency and compare the calculated amount with the usual market price and the promotion terms.

The tool does not verify a crossed-out price, coupon eligibility, minimum spend, delivery, tax or cashback. Those conditions can change the real amount paid even when the percentage arithmetic is correct.

These answers cover the cases in which the base price or the order of operations changes the result.

How do I calculate 20% off quickly?

Multiply the original price by 0.8. For 1500, the final price is 1200 and the saving is 300.

Why do 20% and 10% become 28%?

The second 10% applies to the already reduced 80%. The remaining share is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28% has been removed.

Can I recover a price before a 100% discount?

No. A 100% discount turns every original price into zero, so the starting value is indeterminate.

Should I include a currency symbol?

No. Enter all monetary values in the same currency. The calculator keeps that unit without converting it.

Why can the checkout total differ by a cent?

A shop may round each line, tax amount or final basket at a different stage. The calculator rounds only the displayed result.

Does a large percentage guarantee the best deal?

No. Compare the final amount with the normal market price and check eligibility, bundle and delivery conditions.
