How the pressure converter works
Enter pressure in hectopascals or pascals. The paired field updates immediately, and the middle control reverses the conversion.
The prefix hecto supplies the whole calculation
Hecto means one hundred, so one hectopascal contains exactly one hundred pascals. Multiply hPa by 100 to obtain Pa; divide Pa by 100 for the reverse direction.
The factor is exact. A pascal is the SI pressure unit, while hPa is a convenient larger unit often used for atmospheric pressure.
Values worth recognising
- 0.01 hPa = 1 Pa. A hundredth of a hectopascal is one pascal.
- 850 hPa = 85,000 Pa. Move from the larger unit to the smaller one by multiplying.
- 1,000 hPa = 100,000 Pa. Both values describe the same pressure.
- 101,325 Pa = 1,013.25 hPa. Divide by 100 when a data source uses pascals.
Conversion does not correct the measurement
The result keeps the same pressure type and reference. It does not change absolute pressure into gauge pressure, reduce a reading to sea level or compensate for altitude and instrument error.
Extra digits in the result do not improve a rounded source value. Keep the original context with the number, especially when comparing station pressure with sea-level pressure.
Questions about hPa and Pa
The most useful checks concern the factor, notation and measurement reference.
How many pascals are in one hectopascal?
Exactly 100 pascals.
How do I convert hPa to Pa?
Multiply the hectopascal value by 100.
How do I convert Pa to hPa?
Divide the pascal value by 100.
Are hPa and millibars numerically equal?
Yes. One hectopascal and one millibar both equal 100 pascals.
Does changing units alter the weather reading?
No. It only rewrites the same pressure in another unit; the measurement and its reference stay unchanged.
