How the joule converter works
Enter an energy value in joules or kilojoules. The other field updates immediately, and the middle control swaps the direction.
A kilojoule contains 1000 joules
Joule is the SI unit of energy. The prefix kilo means one thousand, so the relationship between these two units is exact:
Divide joules by 1000 to get kilojoules. Multiply kilojoules by 1000 to return to joules.
Useful conversions
- 250 J = 0.25 kJ. Divide 250 by 1000.
- 1000 J = 1 kJ. This is the unit relationship.
- 2500 J = 2.5 kJ. The decimal value stays exact.
- 18 kJ = 18,000 J. Multiply by 1000.
What the result does and does not tell you
Changing from J to kJ only changes how the same amount of energy is written. It does not change the physical quantity.
The converter does not estimate energy from power and time, food values or experimental measurements. Keep only as many decimal places as your source data justify.
